Having learned to dive late in life I made up for it in my first year by clocking up 120+ open water dives in places from the UK to Australia. I went from a non diver to a technical deco diver in 9 months and loved every second of it. Military style fins, or as they are more widely known in diving circle, Jet Fins are popular because the stiff blades and high fences around the edges make them more suitable for kicks other than the standard flutter kick. The amount of precision that you can get with stiffer fins like the Jet Style are tremendous. These days I only bring out my floppy pivot fins (which your Mares Volo are an example of), is when I know I am going to be fighting a current.

If I remember correctly, the hole was to reduce turbulence when you kick hard.
