Military style fins, or as they are more widely known in diving circle, Jet Fins are popular because the stiff blades and high fences around the edges make them more suitable for kicks other than the standard flutter kick. The amount of precision that you can get with stiffer fins like the Jet Style are tremendous. These days I only bring out my floppy pivot fins (which your Mares Volo are an example of), is when I know I am going to be fighting a current.
If I remember correctly, the hole was to reduce turbulence when you kick hard.
